Digital Add-On DEX 102 for Desk-Type Analog Computers

Purpose

The DEX 102 digital add-on unit gives a desk-type analog computer (Tischanalogrechner) digital capabilities. All AEG desk-type analog computers can be expanded with this unit (Digitalzusatz). The unit is used as an interconnected system (Verbundsystem) of analog and digital computing elements.

Digital Experiment Control

For the comfortable implementation of test series (Versuchsreihen), a program can automatically run through the individual circuit variants (Schaltungsvarianten) of the analog computer and evaluate them. Programming is performed simply with the keys and switches on the front panel. The computer (Rechner) controls the analog computer in IC (Initial Condition), OP (Operate), Hold, and Output modes.

Digital for Machine Computation (Maschinenrechnung)

For the solution of problems in which one part of the computation can be performed more efficiently digitally, the analog computer can be expanded with digital components (digitale Bauelemente). In this case, the DEX 102 performs the tasks of control, data transfer, and function (Funktionsumwandlung) of the digital unit.

Outputs of the analog computer can be converted to digital values, processed digitally (e.g., display in numeric form — Ziffernform), and fed back as initial conditions (Anfangsbedingungen) or analog voltages to the analog computer.

Special Features

  • Flexible expansion: The Digitalzusatz can be expanded in a modular fashion for a wide variety of tasks. Available plug-in modules (Steckkarten) and assemblies (Baugruppen) can be combined as needed, enabling comprehensive digital-analog hybrid computations (umfangreiche Hybridrechnungen). It is also possible to connect a complete digital computer (vollständiger Digitalrechner).

  • Full integration: The unit fits physically into the desk-type analog computer system and forms a coherent desktop (Schreibtischlösung) hybrid system.

Construction (Aufbau)

The DEX 102 is housed in a 19-inch rack-mount frame (Einschubrahmen) that can be mounted inside the analog computer or used as a separate tabletop unit. A photo shows the unit integrated into the AEG desk analog computer.
