DID YOU KNOW…?
-
That EAI has compiled a series of application examples covering analog computers in the most diverse fields of industry and research? The titles of these so-called “Application Studies” are summarised in a reference list available on request. Studies of interest will of course be sent free of charge.
-
That EAI recently published a “Handbook of Analog Computing”? This book, written in English, covers on approximately 400 pages the construction, applications, and special capabilities of analog computers and is priced at DM 45.–.
-
That it is possible to purchase so-called “Class B” analog computers from EAI? These units of types TR-48, TR-20, and TR-10 come from computing centres in the USA where they have been in use for some time and are offered to interested parties at a reduced price. EAI’s normal delivery and warranty conditions also apply to Class-B computers.
-
That it is now possible to acquire EAI PACE analog computers not only by direct purchase but also on a hire-purchase (leasing) basis. Additionally, such a unit can be rented for a desired period. EAI will be happy to propose advantageous arrangements.
-
That EAI has compiled a new brochure on data acquisition and processing systems and their components? Both analogue and digital units that can be interconnected into systems or used individually are listed and described therein.
PDS 1020 — New Digital Computer
EAI, for many years a leader in the field of analog computing, considers this general-purpose digital computer to close a gap in the existing market. The following specifications illustrate this clearly:
Input:
- Paper tape reader: 50 characters/sec
- Direct keyboard input device
Output:
- Paper tape punch: 50 characters/sec
- Electric typewriter: 15 characters/sec
Memory:
- Magnetostrictive delay-line memory (basic configuration): 2,048 words, expandable to 4,096 words × 16 bits plus sign and parity bits
Word Length:
- Variable: 4, 8, 12, 16, 24 digits plus sign
Operating Times:
- Addition and subtraction: 9.2 ms (average)
- Multiplication and division: 45.2 ms (average)
General:
- Interpreter: special “programming language” containing floating-point arithmetic, special functions such as sin, cos, square root, exp, ln, arctan, etc.
- Machine language includes instructions for binary and decimal arithmetic, address arithmetic, binary and decimal shifting, logical tests
- 4 switches for program branching, expandable to 8 switches
- Decimal arithmetic
- Temperature range: 10°C to 50°C
- Desk-top size, mobile
- 220 V, 50 Hz
Such a digital computer, costing less than DM 100,000 in the standard configuration, is precisely the right tool at the engineer’s workplace in research and industry, for lecturers and students at universities and technical colleges — everywhere where tasks arise that must be solved immediately on-site. A cross-section of typical application areas of the PDS 1020 bears this out:
- Linear programming
- Matrix calculations
- Geodesy
- Cartography
- Trajectory calculations
- Process monitoring
- Control loop analysis
- Heat transfer
- Spectral analysis
- Monte-Carlo modelling
- Meteorological studies
- Statistics
- Force determination
- Academic purposes
A special development of the PDS 1020 is the process computer PDS 1068, which serves for the monitoring and control of industrial manufacturing processes.
Hybrid computing systems result from combining the PDS 1020 with EAI PACE analog computers.
By including the digital computer PDS 1020 in EAI’s product range — which encompasses analog computers, X-Y recorders, digital-to-analogue converters (data plotters), digital voltmeters, special digitising systems, digital-analogue converters, etc. — a complete spectrum of modern electronic data-processing equipment is available.
EAI is ready to demonstrate the PDS 1020 and would be pleased if it could contribute to the solution of problems encountered.
